The Warmth & Wonder Journal

Occasional news & inspiration from the hills…

At Garn Farm: It’s been a great summer… significant birthday’s, outdoor fires under the stars, exploring new local walks (and writing them up for The Barn)… and we even came second in the Duck Race in Clodock! We’ve also had lots of fantastic guests staying in The Barn, who’ve made some lovely comments.

We’re now looking forward to autumnal walks, apple pressing, and getting into the woodland to start some coppicing… oh and plenty of staring at the hills in the crisp light and getting cosy around the woodburning stoves… and there is, of course, availability in The Barn if you want to join us… take some time out, walk the hills, breathe the air, take in the views and plan a hygge filled escape.

Talking of trees... A new Charter for Trees, Woods and People has been created that will guide policy and practice in the UK. We’re with them in believing the people of the UK have a right to the many benefits brought by trees and woods. Sign the new Tree Charter to celebrate and protect this right.

Too busy?… Listen to Oliver Burkeman Is Busy on Radio 4 where he explores why people feel so busy today. Not got time? Try this 5 minute clip instead!

One to look out for: ‘TAWAI – A voice from the forest‘ – new from Bruce Parry (yes him who did the BBC’s The Tribe): “The film is a poetic, thought-provoking investigation into what might have changed within the human psyche since we stopped being nomadic hunter-gatherers and began to turn to agriculture.”

On the book shelf: Claire, a recent guest left a great donation to the library, Border Country by Raymond Williams (born in nearby Pandy and buried in Clodock), “This novel about a young man who returns to his family home is a moving account of the difficulties of returning ‘home’ and the effects of the rapid changes of the 20th century on the communities in these valleys. Highly recommended.”

It’s Sourdough September We’re big fans of sourdough, guests booking through our website are offered a complimentary loaf on arrival… most take up the offer and love it (some might say it’s award winning!). If you’ve always thought about having a go at sourdough yourself September is the time… and when you are here next time you’re welcome to take a scoop of our sourdough starter with you… and Matt’s even thinking about offering a short sourdough making session to guests (ask for details).

Three little pigs…
Our lovely pigs have been a real hit with all our guests over the summer.

They are having a good life, doing a great job clearing brambles in the woodland, and are currently enjoying eating our windfall apples.

They’ll be here until November. :o)
